If it sounds like a simple task for transport veteran Nelligan, former head of the Colorado Motor Carriers Association,consider the sheer scale of the WTTV. “This rolling behemoth makes an 18-wheel tractor-trailer look like a VW micro bus,” says Mike Nelligan.
Really Big Trucks and a Schnable!
Further complicating the process, the WTTV is a rolling store house of on-board technology, all attached to a massive, 200-foot-long trailer full of computer driven hydraulics. The tech laden, split-frame 'articulated’ trailer supports not only the 150-foot blades and wind-turbine assembly; it carries a uniquely specialized, $200,000device called a “Schnable.” The Schnabel is a giant steel device with claws attached and specifically engineered to safely and gently lift and secure the wind mill components, on and off the WTTV. Each component weighs as much as 100-tons. The Schnabel and other components on the WTTV are critical for safe, efficient wind turbine delivery from, as an example, General Electric’s manufacturing center in Tennessee to wind farm sites, most of which are located in distant states.
